A new NSF-funded post-doctoral position is available in Dr. Thomas Shipley’s Lab at the Department of Psychology, Temple University to begin December 1, 2017, with a flexible start date. The post-doctoral fellow will join an interdisciplinary team of geoscientists, psychologists, and engineerings in a project aiming to understand basic decision making by geoscience experts about collecting data in the field, and to translate that understanding to program a mobile robot to semi-autonomously collect Aeolian data for geoscientists. The position will be funded by a new NSF NRI grant “Co-Robotic Systems For Geosciences Field Research.”
The post-doctoral fellow’s main responsibilities will be to conduct expert interviews during field data collection (predominantly in the New Jersey Pine Barrens), to develop a program of research on characterizing geoscientists’ expert knowledge, skills, and decision making strategies, and to collaborate with Dr. Dan Koditschek’s research group in UPenn’s School of Engineering to develop formal models of data collection to be embodied in mobile robots to collect data.
Candidates with a PhD in cognitive psychology, learning sciences, educational psychology, or a related field, with research experience in the domain of expertise, mental models, and decision making are encouraged to apply. Strong analytic, research, and writing skills are required, and a record of published research and experience in qualitative interviewing are highly desirable. Salary will be at NSF post-doctoral rates.
