The Department of Human Development and Quantitative Methodology (HDQM) in the College of Education at the University of Maryland, College Park, is seeking applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position in Human Development at the Assistant/Associate level, to start August 2019. The Human Development program at UMD has two specialization areas, Educational Psychology and Developmental Science, both of which are ranked in the top 10 nationally. The search is open to any area within Human Development, but we have a particular interest in candidates with an ongoing or emerging research program focused on text-based learning or discourse processing (middle childhood and beyond). This includes, but is not limited to studies of reading encompassing cognitive, affective/motivational, and/or neural aspects of literacy skill development.
Qualifications include an earned doctorate in educational psychology, educational neuroscience, developmental psychology, cognitive psychology, human development, or related fields. Candidates should demonstrate exceptionally strong training and background in their research area; evidence of outstanding scholarly research and (in the case of associate professor candidates) evidence of an established research program that has received external funding; interest in collaborative research within and across traditional disciplinary boundaries at Maryland, and teaching at the graduate and undergraduate level. The expectation is that the candidate will affiliate directly with the highly ranked educational psychology specialization within the department. There is also ample opportunity to affiliate with other communities and research centers on campus, including the developmental science community both within the department and at the campus level, the Language and Literacy Research Center, the Neuroscience and Cognitive Science Program, the Maryland Language Science Center, and the Maryland Neuroimaging Center.
The successful candidate will be expected to: (1) develop or enhance a program of research in his/her area; (2) secure external grants and contracts to support her/his research; (3) teach at the graduate and undergraduate levels, including teaching courses in the recently-developed Human Development undergraduate major course sequence; (4) advise master’s and doctoral students; (5) assist in the development of new programs and coursework and; and (6) provide service to the profession at the state, national, and international levels. Candidates with a demonstrated ability to incorporate diverse perspectives into teaching and scholarship as well as a commitment to working with students and groups from underrepresented backgrounds are preferred.
The Human Development Program within HDQM has a current enrollment of about 50 Ph.D. students in its doctoral and master’s programs. The doctoral students all are full time students strongly interested in research training, and receive financial support through the duration of their program. HDQM also contains an exceptionally strong program in measurement, statistics, and evaluation.
