The Department of Teaching and Learning in the Phyllis J. Washington College of Education at the University of Montana announces a search for an Assistant or Associate Professor of Literacy Education. We seek applications for a full-time assistant or associate professor to teach literacy/language arts education courses in a dynamic, field-based teacher education program and K-12 literacy endorsement program. This position involves teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, supervising candidates in partner schools, and advising and mentoring master’s and doctoral students. Preference will be given to applicants who demonstrate: 1) evidence of successful work in teacher education, 2) commitment to fostering school and community partnerships, and 3) expertise in the foundations of language/literacy development and one or more of the following areas: writing pedagogy; adolescent literacy; children’s/young adult literature; rural education; indigenous education; and/or digital literacies. This position begins Autumn of 2024.

Required Qualifications

  • Earned doctorate (ABD with expectation of completion by hire date) in literacy studies or a closely related field.
  • Experience teaching students within the K-12 grade spectrum.
  • Established record of scholarship or demonstration of high scholarly potential.
  • Expertise in multiple areas of literacy education.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience in preservice teacher education.
  • Experience and demonstrated commitment to school and community partnerships.
  • Substantial experience teaching diverse student groups.
