The University of Virginia Arts & Sciences Department of Psychology invites applicants for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Community Psychology. The appointment begins with the fall term of 2019, with an anticipated start date of July 25, 2019. In addition to developing external funding to support research endeavors, candidates will be expected to teach at the graduate and undergraduate levels, engage in graduate mentoring and provide service to the University, Department and professional organizations.

We are seeking a scholar who conducts research within the area of Race and Inequality to join our department. We are particularly interested in candidates whose program of research focuses on issues of racial inequality pertaining to the criminal justice system. Scholars who demonstrate excellence in research on issues of racial inequality in other domains, however, are also encouraged to apply. Successful applicants will have demonstrated promise for developing a nationally recognized research program, including the ability to attract research support. Applicants must have earned a Ph.D. in a relevant field at the time of application, including but not limited to any area of psychology (e.g., community, clinical, developmental, social), public health, social work, human development, or law.

The Department of Psychology has had a strong Community Psychology program, focused on the role of broader societal contexts in shaping human behavior, with a particular emphasis on structural inequalities and their potential to undermine healthy human development. Many of our faculty collaborate across areas and possess affiliations with multiple departmental areas. There are also rich opportunities to collaborate with other schools and departments in the University, including the Department for African-American and African Studies, the Department of Women, Gender, and Sexuality, the UVA Law School, the Curry School of Education, and the Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy.

This position is part of a pan-University, interdisciplinary cluster hire in Race and Inequality. This cross-Grounds initiative builds on UVA’s commitment to creating, advancing, and sustaining a research mission devoted to the study of race, civil rights, and social justice. The cluster includes four tenure-track searches to be conducted by departments across the College of Arts & Sciences, with participation by the humanities, science, and social science divisions, as well as the School of Law and the Curry School of Education.

Review of applications will begin October 1, 2018 and the search will remain open until filled.
