Job description
As an Assistant Professor you will be employed in the Department of Education at the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences, Utrecht University. The staff of the Department of Education provides the teaching of the Bachelor’s degree programme in Educational Sciences and the University Teacher Education Programme for Primary Education (ALPO), the one-year Master’s degree programme in Educational Sciences, the two year Master’s degree programme in Educational Sciences: Learning in Interaction (in collaboration with the Department of Special Education: Cognitive & Motor Disabilities), and the University Teacher Education Programmes for Secondary Education. All of these programmes are seeing a growing enrolment and specifically the Master’s degree programme in Educational Sciences and the teacher education programmes are in a process of renewal.

The research programme of the Department, Education and Learning: Development in Interaction, is aimed at the regulation of interaction processes in learning and studies how this affects cognitive and social-emotional development of learners in both formal teaching situations (primary, secondary, and higher education) and professional settings.

As an Assistant Professor, you will be combining research and teaching activities. Based on your expertise, you will be teaching a number of the above-mentioned programmes. Your research activities will be conducted within the research programme and you will participate in the national Interuniversity Centre for Educational Sciences (ICO).

Tasks
The position involves 60% teaching activities and 40% research time. The core tasks will include: 

  • independently setting up and teaching some of the degree courses within the curriculum of the Department;
  • carrying out and supervising research within the scope of the research area of ‘Education and Learning: Development in Interaction’;
  • contributing to the acquisition of research funding for the benefit of the research programme;
  • contributing to the dissemination of the research results and its applications to the research community as well as the general public;
  • when mutually agreed, educational consultancy within Utrecht University as well as for the benefit of external clients within the field of education can become part of your tasks.
   
Qualifications
We are looking for someone who:

  • holds a PhD degree and has research experience in the field of Educational Sciences, preferably within the domain of the research programme;
  • boasts scientific creativity and productivity, as evidenced by being published in (international) peer-reviewed publications;
  • fulfills the criteria for admission to the Interuniversity Centre for Educational Sciences (ICO);
  • is able to contribute to the acquisition of external research funding for the benefit of the research programme. Experience in acquiring personal grants (e.g. Rubicon, Veni) is an advantage;
  • has experience in teaching and coordinating degree courses, preferably in an academic institution;
  • has excellent teaching skills;
  • is able to provide inspiring lectures, has an eye for the modernisation of teaching methods, and can apply own research expertise to the teaching, as evidenced by positive teaching assessments;
  • holds a Basic Teaching Qualification (BKO) from Utrecht University or another Dutch or foreign university, or is willing to acquire this qualification in the near future;
  • is fluent in English;
  • has excellent interpersonal skills and is able to work independently as well as within a team.
   
Offer
We offer a temporary full-time position for five years. Your salary will range from a minimum of €3,324 to a maximum of €5,171 per month based on a full-time appointment (i.e. salary scale 11/12 according to the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities). In addition, we offer attractive and flexible secondary terms of employment such as an annual holiday pay of 8%, an end-of-year bonus of 8.3% per year and partially paid parental leave.
