As part of a major investment, the Department of Education seeks to appoint a total of three Lecturers (equivalent to Assistant Professor) and a Senior Lecturer (equivalent to Associate Professor) from 1st August 2020 to contribute to research and teaching in the field of psychology in education, including in the area of mental health and wellbeing (MHWB). These vacancies are also advertised as Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Mental Health and Wellbeing in Education and your application will be considered for both posts.
The Department is one of the six founding departments of the University of York and has one of the largest graduate schools of education in the UK.
Role
We are looking to appoint outstanding candidates who will carry out research in an area of MHWB or psychology applied to educational contexts, and contribute to teaching and supervision on the BPS-accredited BSc and MSc Psychology in Education programmes and a new MSc in Mental Health & Wellbeing in Education (MHWBE) launching in September 2020.
Your role will be to develop research objectives, projects and proposals and carry out individual or collaborative research projects and to lead on and/or contribute to the production of research outputs and research outcomes. You will also be expected to design, develop and deliver teaching on our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, to carry out supervision and to undertake a range of administrative and managerial responsibilities.
We are open to applicants from all fields of psychology (e.g., social, cognitive, developmental, research methods) applied to education settings and are also interested in candidates with research and/or a professional background in mental health and well-being (MHWB) in education (e.g., mental and emotional health in children or adolescents, mental health and well-being interventions in schools, trauma and resilience, counselling and therapy, psychopathology).

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed
- You will have a PhD in the field of psychology or mental health and well-being as they apply to education or in education with a focus on psychology or MHWB with appropriate academic professional and teaching qualifications or a willingness to complete the Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice.
- You will have an awareness of national and international education trends and developments in MHWB, psychology and/ or education.
- You will have knowledge and experience of research in MHWB, psychology and/or education including a range of research techniques and methodologies.
- You will have specialist knowledge in one or more of the areas outlined in the personal specification.
- You will be able to evidence dissemination of research findings through various means, for example, publications in research journals or presentation of papers at conferences.
- You will be able to design and deliver teaching material across a range of modules and programmes and have evidence of successful course planning and student supervision.
- You will have the ability to extend, transform and apply knowledge from scholarship and have knowledge and experience of a range of teaching techniques to enthuse and engage students.
- Highly developed oral and written communication skills including the ability to write publications, develop research objectives, projects and proposals and to disseminate research findings using other appropriate means.
- You will have a commitment to high quality, be able to display creativity, initiative and judgement in relation to your work and be able to plan and prioritise your own workload.
- You will be able to demonstrate a collaborative ethos, be willing to work proactively with colleagues and display a positive attitude towards colleagues and students.
- You will show commitment to the Department/University through the undertaking of management and administration duties.
Appointment to Senior Lecturer would be made primarily in relation to the experience and career stage of individual candidates. In addition to the above, candidates should be able to demonstrate that they meet the following criteria:
- Outstanding qualities and achievements in scholarship and research at a national and international level and a well established national reputation in MHWB, psychology and/or education
- A proven track record in research with high quality journal publications and conference presentations and an ability to demonstrate major research leadership both internally and externally
- Ability to provide academic leadership in research area and to lead a research team where appropriate
- An extensive track record of teaching and learning in HE at undergraduate and postgraduate level or in a demonstrably similar context and an ability to motivate other staff in the areas of teaching and research.
