The School of Education at the University of Michigan seeks a colleague for a tenure-track appointment (open rank) in the Combined Program in Education and Psychology (CPEP). We seek applications from a diverse pool of scholars with a strong focus on teacher practices and programs that facilitate the growth of social-emotional competencies, especially as these practices intersect with those that promote equitable schooling environments for youth of color or youth who have been marginalized in school settings. We seek a scholar who can build on their expertise to play a major role in the creation and use of scholarship in education, who has strong methodological training in quantitative and/or qualitative methods, who has the ability to teach courses in education and/or psychology, and who seeks to influence practice and policy that will improve student well-being and academic achievement. We seek an energetic and collaborative colleague who will contribute to achieving our program’s potential and vision, and who will uphold high standards for research, teaching, and service to the profession. Candidates should have a track record of outstanding scholarship in psychology or education. The appointment may be at the rank of assistant professor (tenure track), or associate or full professor (with tenure). Candidates for associate or full professor should be nationally-recognized scholars with a strong record of empirical studies and external funding. Candidates at the assistant professor level should have outstanding potential and a defined research agenda related to social-emotional learning. At all levels, demonstrated teaching ability, strong methodological skills, and desire to develop sponsored research are required.
Successful candidates will have:
- A doctorate in psychology, education or a related social science field;
- A program of research and publications relevant to social-emotional learning, commensurate with rank;
- Experience teaching;
- A track record of developing and securing grants to support research (Associate/Full), or the promise of developing such a track record (Assistant); and
- A strong interest in advising and mentoring graduate students.

Candidates will be expected to pursue an active research agenda, teach graduate and undergraduate courses, advise graduate students, direct doctoral dissertations, and serve as an active member of the School of Education, the University, and educational and psychological professional communities. Experience mentoring students of diverse backgrounds, including women, students of color, LGBTQ students and first-generation college students, is desired.
THE COMBINED PROGRAM IN EDUCATION AND PSYCHOLOGY
For more than five decades, CPEP has been one of the premier programs in educational psychology. It is distinguished by its breadth of opportunities within this interdisciplinary field of study, by meaningful research of national significance, and by generations of graduates who provide exceptional leadership through scholarship and practice. As an interdisciplinary program, students and faculty alike are attracted by the wide range of topics reflected in its curriculum, research projects and professional activities. The program offers Ph.D. degrees in Education & Psychology. The work of the program is enhanced by the rich and diverse set of resources available at the University of Michigan.
SALARY AND BENEFITS
We plan to fill the position with a start date of September 2020. Salary will be negotiated on the basis of the candidate’s experience and qualifications. The appointment will be for the regular nine-month academic year with possible additional remuneration for administrative duties.
