Open Rank Instructional Design and Technology Position
The Virginia Tech School of Education is seeking applications for an open-rank professor of Instructional Design and Technology (Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor). This nine-month, tenure-track/tenured faculty position is available August 2023 at the main campus in Blacksburg, Virginia.
This appointment provides a unique opportunity to join and to shape a vibrant research and education community situated in an increasingly diverse and globally connected university. Applicants seeking appointment with tenure at the Associate Professor or Professor rank must meet Virginia Tech’s criteria for tenure at the appropriate rank.
Responsibilities: (a) Conducting an active research and publication agenda, including pursuing external grant funding; (b) designing and teaching courses (online, hybrid, and/or face-to-face) that prepare students for a broad range of instructional design and technology positions in PreK-12 school systems, higher education, government agencies, business and industry, and non-profit organizations; (c) supervising master’s and doctoral students, and (d) providing impactful service to the School of Education, the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences, at the university level, and within the profession. The typical teaching load is a total of four courses per year (2 courses in the fall and 2 in the spring semester), and the position requires occasional travel to attend conferences and meetings.
Required qualifications:
- A Ph.D. or Ed.D. in instructional design and technology, learning technologies, learning sciences, or in a related field by appointment start date
- An established and active research agenda as evidenced by peer-reviewed publications
- Demonstrated excellence in teaching undergraduate and/or graduate instructional design and technology courses online, hybrid, and/or face-to-face
- Demonstrated record of service and leadership at the local, state, and/or national levels
- Evidence of tangible outcomes related to the advancement of diversity, equity, and inclusion
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate and to function effectively as a team member
Preferred qualifications:
- Applied experience designing and developing learning environments based on established educational theories and instructional design practices
- Extensive record of funded, impactful research and experience managing grant budgets, activities, and staff, commensurate with experience level
- Demonstrated ability to mentor master’s and doctoral students, including chairing and serving on dissertation committees
- Demonstrated ability and willingness to mentor junior faculty
- Demonstrated ability to contribute to course and program development
- Experience developing and sustaining interdisciplinary initiatives, collaborative partnerships, and/or outreach.
