The Department of Educational Psychology within the College of Education at the University of Illinois is seeking to hire an outstanding senior or midcareer scholar in the cognitive science of learning. The successful candidate will be an energetic individual with the leadership qualities required to enhance the College’s strategic interests in research at the interface of cognition and education. This position is part of a University initiative to create a center for excellence in the Applied Learning Sciences, including a new Learning Sciences Laboratory. Faculty hired under this initiative will be expected to contribute to this effort and to carry out an externally funded program of research and scholarship; to teach both graduate and undergraduate courses in the learning sciences; to advise doctoral and masters students; and to assume an active role as a member of scholarly communities in the Department, College, and University. The successful candidate will have an appreciation for applied and translational research, as well as for research into the fundamental mechanisms of learning with clear implications for developing instructional principles (i.e., “use-inspired basic science”). The specific substantive area of interest is open, but preference will be given to applicants with interests the acquisition and organization of knowledge and its deployment; transfer of learning; problem solving and expertise especially in the STEM areas; educational technology and multimedia learning; applications of assessment to promote learning; reading and discourse understanding; second-language studies; adult literacy; or educational neuroscience.

Qualifications: The candidate must have an earned doctorate in educational psychology, cognitive psychology, the learning sciences, or a related field. A strong track record of impactful published scholarship and external funding is expected. Because interdisciplinarity is a strong tradition at the University of Illinois, a history of research collaborations with partners in related fields, such as computer science, engineering, neuroscience, or the STEM disciplines, is highly desirable. In addition, the successful candidate will be able to provide evidence of teaching abilities at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
Salary and Starting Date: Salary will be commensurate with experience. The proposed starting date is August 16, 2014.
